The Hate U Give (2018) - Shreya Sachdev
The Hate U Give is a 2018 drama/thriller film directed by George Tillman and stars Amandla Stenberg, K.J Apa, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Russell Hornsby, and many others. This movie is about a girl named Starr (played by Amandla Stenberg) who finds her life changing after her best friend and crush Khalil (played by Algee Smith) gets shot despite not doing anything wrong by a white police officer. Unfortunately for Starr, she witnesses the incident and soon finds out that her best friend is dead. Therefore, a big theme in this movie is the stereotypes that black people are constantly faced with everyday when it comes to crime, theft, and the ways in which they were raised. This movie is very relevant to the 21st century since nowadays we are constantly reading incidents in which black men are shot in the street by white police officers despite not being a threat. I really enjoyed this film and found it to be very interesting, but I will say that it’s quite heavy and sad to watch. I liked how before the incident happened, the audience learns about Starr and her home life which makes it easier for the audience to connect with her. There are also many relationships that change in the movie and those are very interesting to watch, for example the relationship between Starr and her boyfriend, Starr and her best friend, and Starr and her family. Most importantly, this movie brings light to a sensitive but extremely important topic and is definitely worth watching because it is executed very well. I would give this film a 9/10.
