Us (2019) - Shreya Sachdev
Us is a 2019 thriller film directed by Jordan Peele that stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Noelle Sheldon, Cali Sheldon, and many others. Us is about a family of four that decide to go to the beach for a vacation with their friends. From the beginning of the film, we are introduced to Lupita Nyong’o’s character as she plays the mother in the movie. We learn that the beach is a bit of a sensitive location for her due to a previous childhood traumatic experience. As the movie goes on, the audience learns that this family is being haunted by another family that look completely identical to them. This identical family plans on killing them and taking over their lives, and therefore this story revolves around how they must escape from this psychotic family as well as how Lupita Nyong’o’s character must now confront her past. I was so excited to watch this movie because this is directed by Jordan Peele and he’s one of my favorite directors. I loved the film “Get Out” because it’s so unique and so amazing, and I was really impressed with his work. I thought “Us” was going to be another breakthrough but unfortunately it disappointed me. Don’t get me wrong, the acting and the cinematography was great. In other words, I think this movie was executed very well but it lacked a clear story. I was very confused throughout the film and I didn’t understand the ending at all. Perhaps Jordan Peele’s intention was to make this movie more abstract, but I felt very uncompleted at the end of it. I would have to give “Us” a 6.5/10.
