Ma (2019) - Shreya Sachdev

Ma Movie:

Movie Ma / Ma Movie Review / Ma Movie 2019 / Ma The Movie / The Movie Ma / Ma Horror Movie

Ma is a 2019 thriller film directed by Tate Taylor and stars Tate Taylor himself, Octavia Spencer, Diana Silvers, Corey Fogelmanis, McKaley Miller, Luke Evans, Juliette Lewis, and many others. Ma is about a lonely woman named Sue Ann (played by Octavia Spencer) who becomes friends with a group of high schoolers and offers them her basement to have parties in, just so she can have some friends. Sue Ann tells the group of high schoolers to address her as Ma. At first, Ma seems to be a nice old lady who just wants the teenagers to have some fun, but very soon it’s clear that her obsessive partying habits and friendship with the teenagers is much more sinister than at first glance. I was so excited when I saw the trailer for this movie, and I think everyone was, since the trailer has over eight million views. Once I was finished with my exams, I tried finding this movie online, and I found a few versions but they were all really bad quality, so I decided to wait for a version that had HD quality, since I was so excited to watch this movie and wanted everything to be perfect. Unfortunately, I watched this movie today and I think Tate Taylor owes me ninety minutes of my life back. I disliked this movie when I watched it in high quality, so I can’t even imagine how people must have felt when they watched it in bad quality. Anyways, I wouldn’t say that this movie is terrible because there were many scenes that really got me hooked and that I thought were very suspenseful, but there were also scenes where the characters just made the dumbest decisions and acted like complete idiots that it was so hard for me to feel empathy for them. I think it’s very obvious that Ma is trying to get back at the teenagers’ parents for being so cruel to her in high school, but when they showed the flashback of Ma in high school, I think that it was poorly crafted and that they could’ve really emphasized the bullying that Ma went through in high school which would’ve helped the audience really understand why Ma decided to get revenge after all these years. Overall, I think that this movie had a lot of potential but execution really lacked. I would give this movie a 5/10.
