Trick (2019) - Shreya Sachdev
Trick is a 2019 horror film directed by Patrick Lussier and stars Jamie Kennedy, Omar Epps, Ellen Adair, and many others. Trick is about a detective who is trying to track down a serial killer who has been after him for many years. This movie isn’t very well known, and the only reason that I’ve heard of this movie and got to see it was actually because I was invited to a private screening of this movie at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Due to the fact that I’m a Cinema Studies undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, the festival wanted to invite me to see a movie for free, which was really sweet of them. Unfortunately, the movie wasn’t so sweet itself. This movie is without a doubt one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life, and I think that TIFF owes me two hours of my life back. I’m not going to lie. When the movie first started, I was actually really intrigued because I thought that the cinematography was really great. The first scene began with a bunch of kids going trick or treating on Halloween night, and immediately you got the vibe that something sinister was going to happen, but as time went on I began to realize that this movie did not have a story, and instead just consisted of gory and violent scenes one after the other. Moreover, in the end you supposedly find out who the serial killer is and there’s absolutely no valid explanation as to why the killer did what he did. Overall, I would say that the execution of this movie really lacked because there were so many unexplained violent scenes and characters making dumb decisions that I lost so much respect for the movie. With a better screenplay, this movie could definitely improve. I would give Trick a 3/10.
