Insatiable Season One (2018) - Shreya Sachdev
Insatiable is a new 2018 TV show directed by Susan Johnson and stars Debby Ryan, Dallas Roberts, Alyssa Milano, Christopher Gorham, and several others. The show follows the story of an overweight teenager named Patty who has been bullied and tormented throughout her entire high school career for being overweight. One day, after having surgery on her nose, she wakes up to find herself become extremely skinny. All of a sudden, Patty feels the need to get revenge and ruin the people's lives that made her life so horrible for being overweight. I'm going to start off by saying that even though the show is somewhat entertaining, I'm definitely not a big fan of this show. My biggest problem with the show is that it takes extremely heavy topics such as health, bullying, pedophilia, and corruption, and simply makes a joke about each topic without acknowledging the way that viewers are going to feel when they watch certain scenes. When I first saw the trailer for this show, I was excited because I love Debby Ryan, and thought that this was a show that was meant to empower girls and show them that all shapes, colors, and sizes are beautiful no matter what. However, it seems as if the moment Patty becomes skinny, this is when she begins to receive attention from guys and begins to sit with the "popular girls at school". I just think that if this TV show really is about showing young women that all body shapes are beautiful, then it should portray Patty as not having the life she imagined she would have when she turned skinny. Instead, however, she wins beauty pageants, loses her virginity, becomes friends with the most popular girl at school, and is treated differently from how she previously was. Thus, I think that this show does a lot of body shaming which I wasn't happy to see and wasn't expecting considering this show is directed by a woman. Aside from how trash the content of this show is however, it's important to address that another flaw in this show is how many unnecessary characters there are and how they all seem to have a secret that just has to come out later in the episodes. I see no point in giving these characters so many secrets just because the majority of the characters in this show are useless and have no purpose, there is no reason to give them so many secrets and so much background information about them. If this was a drama/suspense show, then perhaps all the secrets would work, but it's not so it does not work. Anyways, for positives I would say that the acting is good, but cinematography and sound definitely needs some work. I was overall really disappointed with the show since appreciating all body shapes is something I really care about and this show was a huge let down. I would give Insatiable a 4/10.
