The Unsolved Disappearance Of Lars Mittank (2014) - Shreya Sachdev
DISCLAIMER: No disrespect is intended towards anyone that I talk about on this blog post. This blog post is for educational purposes and is being posted on this website in order to raise awareness about this case and to truly hope that the grieving families and friends of these victims find closure and finally find out what happened to their loved one(s). I have gathered all this information on the internet, but unfortunately I do not know how accurate or inaccurate it is. If I have made a mistake somewhere, then I apologize. It is not my intention to spread false information.
In July 2014, 28 years old Lars Mittank went on a trip with a couple of his friends to Bulgaria. Lars and his friends left Germany on the 30th of June and they planned on returning back to Germany on the 7th of July. Lars and his friends stayed in an extremely nice hotel whilst they enjoyed the beach and enjoy the sun.
Towards the end of the trip, Lars was actually involved in a fight at a bar. The fight was about a game of football that Lars and his friends were watching at the bar. The fight ended up being so bad that Lars fractured his eardrum. At the hospital, the doctor told Lars that he was able to fly which was supposed to be great news since Lars and his friends were meant to be leaving Bulgaria in just two days. However, for some unknown reason, Lars stated that he wanted to stay back because he thought that it would be best for him.
On the 6th of July, two days before Lars and his friends were meant to leave, Lars and his friends decided to go to another bar. They were the last customers there and then decided that they were going to stop my McDonald's to get some food. As they were walking to McDonald's, Lars actually disappeared. Lars' friends couldn't locate him and had absolutely no idea where he went for a couple of hours. But then, in the early morning of July 7th, Lars rolled back into the hotel and told his friends that he had actually gotten into another fight in the time that he disappeared and that it was with the same guys that he fought with at the bar. Lars told his friends that these guys had actually hired a couple of Bulgarians to help beat him up. None of Lars' friends believed this story but then insisted on staying with Lars for the next couple of days to give him company. However, Lars told his friends that he was absolutely fine and that they should go ahead without him, eventually convincing them.
Lars ended up moving to another hotel called Hotel Color that was located in quite a sketchy part of Bulgaria. Lars was having trouble staying there and felt extremely anxious about the hotel since it just caused him discomfort and made him feel quite afraid. When Lars was at this hotel, he ended up calling his mother and told his mother to cancel all of his credit cards and overall just sounded extremely paranoid. Lars also told his mother that he thought that he was being followed by four men and that they were following him because they wanted his antibiotics that he had for his ear. Due to how paranoid Lars sounded, Lars' mother ended up booking Lars a flight for the 8th of July (the next day) so that Lars could come back home to Germany.
The next morning, Lars took a taxi to the airport to catch his flight for Germany. This is when things get extremely weird: There is security footage of Lars in which people can see that when Lars first enters the airport, he starts talking to a woman (nobody knows exactly what he said) but judging by the hand gestures shown in the security footage, it is quite obvious that Lars is asking this woman where the medical services are since right after talking to this woman, Lars goes into medical services. When Lars is inside medical services, a construction worker walks in and the moment that this construction worker walks in, Lars freaks out and runs out of the airport: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsqATIHqAqg he is seen climbing over a fence and to this day has never been seen again.
1. The first theory in this case is that Lars' story about how he got into a second fight with the same guys he had fought with at the bar along with hired Bulgarian men is true. In context, these Bulgarian men were part of a drug mule and forced Lars to get them drugs. Due to how scared Lars got, he chose to disappear from the planet of the earth so that these Bulgarian men couldn't track him down.
2. The second theory is about the side effects that the antibiotics of his ear medication possibly could have had on him. These side effects are extremely rare unless a person is taking these antibiotics with drugs or alcohol, which Lars was as we know that he went to a bar the night that he got these antibiotics. Thus, it is possible that Lars had some sort of psychological episode after he ingested these antibiotics due to the fact that he was also drinking.
3. The third and last theory is that this entire trip and this whole thing was set up by Lars so that he could disappear off the planet of the earth. This would make sense as to why Lars asked his mother to cancel all of his credit cards and make his friends leave Bulgaria before him. Furthermore, it doesn't make sense as to why he went to the airport in the first place if he was just going to leave. Lars was also said to be extremely happy at home and nobody could think of a reason as to why Lars would want to disappear. However, after Lars runs out of the airport, there is security footage to show him casually jogging as if he isn't really afraid of anybody coming to get him. Nevertheless, this could be because he knows that he got away.
Which theory do I believe?
I had to think a lot about this one but eventually decided that I believe the second theory the most. When these antibiotics are mixed with alcohol or drugs, the side effects can be extremely apparent and powerful and so it would make sense to believe that Lars had a psychological episode due to the fact that he was ingesting these antibiotics with alcohol. I don't believe the third theory because it doesn't make sense for Lars to show up at the airport with his bags packed only to run away last minute if this was a planned run away form the beginning. I also don't believe the theory about Lars being afraid from the men he fought with at the bar because if he truly was scared then he would have left with his friends to go back home to Germany. The fact that he felt extremely paranoid all of a sudden means that something happened in his mind for him to feel that way. I believe that he had a psychological episode due to the fact that he was taking his antibiotics with drugs. As for where Lars is now, it is highly likely that he committed suicide if he continued to felt extremely paranoid or had an accidental death. Unfortunately, I don't believe he is alive.
Analyzing Lars' personality, to a certain extent it would make sense to suggest that Lars disappeared on his own since he is seen to be an attention seeker. He lied to his friends about getting into a second fight and so perhaps if he wanted to disappear off the planet of the earth he wanted to do it in a memorable way, such as running out of the airport. Nevertheless, I still think that I believe the second theory the most.
