Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers were both dutch students and decided to take a six week trip to Panama. Lisanne and Kris wanted to go to Panama to learn Spanish, volunteer with children, as well as have a great time and treat this trip as a reward to them because they had just graduated and this trip was their way to reward themselves.
Their trip began on the 15th of March in 2014, and for the first two weeks the two friends were just exploring the city and being tourists. After these two weeks, they travelled to Boquete which is where they were staying with a host family and where they were going to be staying for the next four weeks. On the 1st of April, the girls decided to go on a hike. The fact that they decided to do this is actually quite strange because they had planned on going on the exact same hike the next day with a professional tour guide, but for some reason they also decided to go by themselves one day before going with somebody who actually knew the area.
On the 1st of April, they were seen having lunch with two dutch men who they had became friends with previously. The four were seen to just having lunch and talking. Shortly after lunch, Lisanne and Kris decided to hike up to the Baru Volcano which wasn't far from the host's family house. When they hiked up, they decided to take the host family's dog with them as well. The strange thing is that on the night of the 1st of April, the host family's dog returned to their house whereas Lisanne and Kris didn't. When this happened, the host family was a little worried but decided not to do anything because they thought that perhaps Lisanne and Kris wanted to spend a little bit more time on their hike which is why they decided to send their dog back home. However, the host family did decide to call Lisanne's mom up to ask her if Lisanne had messaged her or if she had heard anything from her, and Lisanne's mom told her that she hadn't heard anything.
The next morning, at 8:00am, the girls were meant to meet with their tour guide, and when they didn't show up, he got quite worried and stopped by the host family's house to ask them if they knew where the girls were. The host family said that they didn't know where the girls were and that they hadn't returned home the night before. The host family saw that all of the girls belongings were still in their rooms and that the only things that weren't there were what Lisanne and Kris had taken with them on their hike the previous day. This is when the host family and the tour guide decided to call the police.
On April 3rd, there was a small search sent out to analyze the area where the girls had gone for a hike on the 1st of April. However, it wasn't a big search and it was more or less to just see if they could find any clues about where the girls could have gone. A few locals decided to help as well. Unfortunately, this small search found absolutely nothing related to Lisanne and Kris and there were no clues or anything.
On the 6th of April, both Lisanne and Kris's families flew out to Panama as well as dutch detectives and sniffer dogs to help properly search the area and find the missing girls. Again, unfortunately, this massive search did not find a single clue relating to Lisanne and Kris's disappearance. They didn't find a single scratch on a rock or even a marking.
It wasn't until 10 weeks later on June 14th when an indigenous couple found Lisanne's blue backpack. This couple found the backpack miles and miles away from where Lisanne and Kris had gone on their hike. When police investigated this backpack, they found all of Lisanne's items such as a camera, phone, cash, sunglasses, a bathing suit, and a water bottle. Surprisingly, they were all in really good shape. When investigators looked at the contents of their phones, they found that the girls had tried to call emergency services over multiple days and over multiple times. The first call was only made a few hours after the girls had left on their hike and then it went on for several days. Unfortunately, none of the calls went through except for one which only got through half a second. Lisanne's phone died on April 5th at 5:00pm and Kris's phone, which was an iPhone, hadn't made any calls but had been switched on and off several times. (probably looking to see if they had reception)
On the 6th of April, Kris's phone had been turned on and a whole bunch of incorrect passwords had been put in trying to get through the phone. Thus, it obviously wasn't Kris who was accessing her phone but rather somebody who didn't know her password. After these incorrect passwords, the person who was trying to get through never got through her phone again despite the phone being turned on and off several times. The last time the phone was turned on was at 10:51am on the 11th of April.
Investigators also looked through Lisanne's camera, and found several photos of Lisanne and Kris. Some were normal photos of them enjoying the hike that day, but there was also a set of 98 photos that had been taken on the 8th of April between 1:00am and 4:00am. They were flash photos and one of these were taken every two minutes for that time period. Nobody knows why these photos were taken and what purpose they served, but there have been many theories. One theory is that the girls were trying to navigate their way and trying to see where they were going which is why they used flash photography, another theory is that the girls were trying to alert a possible search engine party, another theory is that they were trying to scare off animals with the light, and another theory is that the girls took these photos for a specific reason to try and tell people where they were by the kind of photos they took. People theorized that there was a method to the photos and that the girls would always take three close up photos and then one far away one to signal something. Another interesting thing to point out is that there was one photo found on the camera that consisted of Kris, and many people believe that they can see an injury on Kris's temple.
After Lisanne's backpack was found, another search was sent out in order to look for the girls again but this time search in the area that Lisanne's backpack was found since Lisanne's backpack had been found ages away from where the girls had been hiking. When investigators searched this specific area, they found Kris's shorts which were laid neatly on a piece of rock. Two months later after they found the shorts and the backpack, they also found a boot which actually contained a human foot inside. Very close to the boot, there was a pelvic bone that was found. 33 other bones (both determined to be Lisanne and Kris's) were found near the area but still kilometers apart from each other. 28 of these bones were from Lisanne's left foot, and the pelvic bone that was found was from Kris's. What's strange is that tests found that Lisanne's bones still had a bit of flesh attached to them whereas Kris's had actually been bleached. These findings did bring up the confirmation that both girls were unfortunately dead, but also brought up many questions as to where the rest of the remains are. There was also no signs of animal scavenging on the bones either. Kris's bone had also been bleached by lime, which you cannot find in local soil.
1. The first theory is that the girls passed away from natural elements. This theory of course makes sense due to the fact that the girls had tried to call emergency services multiple times, and didn't know the area very well. Locals from Panama stated that even though the trails that the girls were said to be on were fairly easy to follow, a trail did come after which was very difficult to follow and should've only been followed be indigenous people.
2. The second theory is that Kris died first and that Lisanne died afterwards. From the photos that were found on Lisanne's camera, investigators could determine that the girls were at a point in which there was something called monkey bridge. A monkey bridge was basically when a person wrapped their arms around a rope above them as well as their legs on the rope below them and tried to cross a river this way. Thus, many people theorize that perhaps Kris fell off this monkey bridge and died which is why Lisanne was trying to call emergency services. When her phone ran out of battery, she tried to use Kris's phone but couldn't because she didn't know the password, which would explain the incorrect passwords. Both phones were also found in Lisanne's backpack which would explain why Kris's phone wasn't with her.
Which theory do I believe?
I definitely believe the theory that Lisanne Froon stayed alive for a bit longer than Kris Kremers. However, I do believe that both girls ended up passing away due to natural elements such as hunger, thirst, and coldness. I believe that the two girls went on the hike together, and soon at around 16:30, they realized that they had gone too far into their hike and were now lost. This explains why Kris tried to make a phone call to emergency services at 16:39. When Kris realized that the call wasn't getting through, Lisanne then tried to use her phone to make the call which was at 16:51. Both phones were not able to get the calls through because there was no service, and the girls decided that they would try another time when there was service which is why they decided to save the battery and not make any more phone calls on the 1st of April. On the 2nd of April, there were three phone calls made (two from Lisanne's phone and one from Kris's) but there was still no service and the calls weren't getting through. On the 3rd of April, there was one more call made and both phones were switched on and off multiple times to check to see if there was any signal. On the 4th of April, Kris's phone was turned on to see if there was signal and there was no activity on Lisanne's phone. On the 5th of April, Lisanne's phone ran out of battery and Kris's phone was turned on again to check if there was any signal. On the 6th of April, Kris's phone couldn't be accessed because the phone pin that was being entered was wrong. Thus, this is when I believe that Kris Kremers unfortunately passed away from the natural elements but Lisanne Froon stayed alive. I believe that Lisanne Froon was able to stay alive because it did rain a few days afterwards which is why Lisanne must've been able to collect some water with her water bottle. From the 6th of April, Lisanne was on her own and I believe that Lisanne was the one who took those 98 flash photos simply because she needed help seeing, and that's the only reason as to why she took them - people who think that she took them because there's some specific method and code to the photos are fools. I highly doubt that's what she's going to be doing at this point in her life. The only reason as to why she took those 98 flash photos is so she could help navigate herself. Three days later, Kris's phone was turned on last time and it was never turned on after this and so I believe that Lisanne Froon passed away on the 11th of April whereas Kris Kremers had already passed away on the 6th of April. I wish I knew where the rest of the remains were and why so many of their bones were found scattered around the area, but unfortunately I don't have the answer to these questions. Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers passed away from natural elements.
